Nobody talks enough about the weird in-between stage of being a pilot: too qualified to quit, not experienced enough to get hired everywhere.
So now you’re chasing hours, refreshing job boards, networking nonstop and trying to trust the process without losing your mind.
Low-time pilots… this phase is rough. We get it.
Focus on your interests and previous career experience and look for some crossover. Think outside of the box in terms of connections and next steps.

It isn’t so much a lack of opportunities, but a bunch of mistakes compounding.
1. Errors cost interviews. The number of recruiters throwing away perfectly qualified candidates because of missing their flight hours, having a picture on the resume or major typos is crazy. It happens every day.
2. Some of the resumes are just BAD. Like “was this made in middle school” bad. It acts as your introduction and reputation before you ever get in the door for an interview. Make sure all of the important questions are answered.
3. Not preparing for the next opportunity. You never know when someone might call to pre-screen and ask you to read an approach plate or ask instrument questions. If you aren’t current or can’t answer questions about the next job you want… get studying.

You’re never going to have a perfect resume in the eyes of every person who views it, no matter how much you spend or if you create it yourself.
The goal is getting it as close as possible.
We focus on making it “piloty” from top to bottom, free from errors and representing everything that’s needed.
There isn’t a cheat code or magical way to “stand out” per se, but it should be easy for you to update and work FOR you, not against you.

True story. I also would get bonus marks in university being the ✨ only ✨ student to hand in assignments with zero spelling, grammar or punctuation errors.

Some resumes don’t get any traction because they’re missing key (dare we say crucial?) pieces of information.
No flight hours or phone number. No certificates and ratings. Things hidden away or tucked at the bottom of 6 pages.
Follow the standard format for pilot resumes. It should be one page with a natural flow of important pilot info. We want it to be “piloty” (going to trademark that term!) from top to bottom.

One size does not fit all, which is why LOTS of emails and DMs we receive mention “not wanting to be a CFI.”
While we think being a CFI is a great gig, people are also all unique. You have to ultimately decide which role is going to work for you because you know yourself best.
Google is your friend. You may have to do some legwork but take the time to research, find lists of companies and connect with people. (The FAA also has lists of every company within certain criteria.)
Use LinkedIn just to see where people are working. If they’re smaller companies and they’re leaving or look like they could be leaving soon based on timelines, write it down.
Don’t waste your time searching Indeed or applying to roles that seem too good to be true.
If you have to take a non-flying job at an airport or for a company, sometimes it pays to play the long game.
Above all, keep pursuing bigger and better things. Think outside the box and meet as many people as you can!

There are a lot of lies being told out there but lately these have been in our DMs:
“You’ll never get hired in this market.”
“It’s a terrible time to go to flight school.”
“Good luck ever finding a job as a pilot.”
No one can determine you won’t get hired somewhere doing something.
You’ll never have a perfect background or resume for every single person who meets you.
Don’t listen to the negativity out there (and PLEASE leave all of the doom-and-gloom Facebook groups!)

You send out 125 applications to be ghosted with zero responses, not even a rejection. Why?

Second, check your resume. Do you really have all of the necessary pieces of who you are as a pilot? Are there mistakes?
Are you applying to jobs with minimums wayyyy above where you are?
Are your applications autofilling with the wrong info?
